The first electric cars were developed in the early 1900s to help combat smog and air pollution. But it wasn’t until 1996 that the General Motors EV1 (shown above) proved that modern electric vehicles could compete with gasoline cars in terms of performance, power options, conveniences and comforts.
With a battery pack that’s spread across the floor of the car, EVs have a low center of gravity and evenly distributed weight. This gives them a smooth ride and allows them to expertly maneuver corners. It also allows them to accelerate with much more torque than gasoline vehicles, for quicker and easier driving.
While EVs don’t produce tailpipe emissions, the electricity used to charge them does create carbon pollution. However, the amount varies depending on whether it’s generated by coal or natural gas, or from renewable resources like wind and solar. And even accounting for these energy emissions, research shows that EVs are responsible for lower levels of greenhouse gases than new gas-powered cars.
EVs also have the added benefit of helping to keep electricity prices affordable and stable for homeowners, businesses and utilities. And with the advent of “bidirectional charging,” properly equipped EVs can send energy back to the grid during peak, high consumption periods. That can reduce both the need for expensive imported oil and the carbon pollution associated with generating the power to run conventional cars and trucks. GM and Pacific Gas & Electric in California have been testing bidirectional charging with the EV1 fleet, and the companies expect to roll out the program to customers in PG&E’s service area in 2023.
