The rise of the electric vehicle has reshaped the way we think about transportation. EVs are cheaper to run and less polluting than gas-powered cars. They also save money in repairs and maintenance because they don’t have complex engines or transmissions.
Buying an EV can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, but it’s important to understand the full cost of ownership. This includes how much electricity you’ll need to charge your car and the cost of gasoline to fill up.
Battery costs vary widely depending on the size of the battery and the charger, but electric vehicles can generally be charged hundreds of dollars cheaper per year than gas-powered cars. Depending on where you live, that could mean big savings for you.
Charging costs depend on the level of charging, the speed at which it is done and the type of charger you use. Faster chargers can recharge a fully-charged battery to 80% in just 15 minutes; slower chargers may take two hours or more.
How your car charges up can also affect the grid. If too many people charge their cars during peak times of demand, it will tax the power grid and potentially cause a shortage.
In the future, electric vehicles could provide a form of energy storage for the grid. They would be able to take on surplus electricity from renewables and return it when demand is low.
GM is building an assembly plant in Lake Orion, Michigan to make EVs, and it has a factory in Stanton, Tennessee that builds electric F-Series vehicles and SK batteries. Similarly, Ford plans to build a new plant in Stanton to assemble the next generation of F-Series trucks.
