As gas-powered cars continue to become ever bigger, a new startup in New York has come up with a solution: Neighborhood electric vehicles (NEV). Designed to be street-legal under low-speed vehicle regulations, these tiny, efficient machines are meant to take back urban roads from the massive trucks and SUVs that clog them.

Ford is making big investments in battery-electric vehicles, including a factory in Michigan that will be able to produce 500,000 vehicles per year. And although the company has encountered a few challenges, its 2025 target is on track, according to Ermal Faulkner, the site’s director.

EVs are the perfect choice for navigating the tight streets and parking spaces of cities, as their pin-sharp handling and nippy acceleration make short trips effortless. They’re also at their most efficient in slow-moving traffic, using very little electricity and emitting no carbon dioxide.

There are plenty of EVs that have been designed for the city, with usable real-world range and easy charging capability. And while many of them cost more than similar gasoline-powered models, some are quite affordable. Moreover, most modern EVs offer what is called “one-pedal driving” as they regenerate energy when you ease off the accelerator. They can even post 0-to-60 times that put many high-performance sports cars to shame.
