Electric vehicles are expected to become more popular in the coming years. Some automakers have already announced plans to produce a fully electric car by 2021. The United States Department of Energy recently released a study which estimates that the electrification of transportation could increase national consumption by 38 percent by 2050.
Although electric cars are not as energy intensive as gasoline or diesel vehicles, they still require charging. Chargers can be installed at home or at public charging stations.
Electric vehicles can drive more than 200 miles on a single charge. Depending on the model, they can reach as far as 500 miles. Compared to gas-powered vehicles, electric cars tend to last longer. And they have fewer moving parts. This means that there are fewer breaks or tune-ups to make.
Most fully electric vehicles can run on both AC and DC power. In addition, regenerative braking helps put braking power back into the electrical grid.
