Electrifying New York Requires New Infrastructure

Electrifying New York, the DOT’s plan for the city’s electric vehicle fleet, will require the city to work with partners at the state and federal level. It will also require the creation of a new charging infrastructure.

The plan calls for tens of thousands of public charging stations by 2030. It also calls for the installation of Level 2 chargers in 20 percent of municipal parking spaces. It would require a total investment of between $3 and $10 billion in utility infrastructure by 2030, according to Boston Consulting Group.

As the number of electric vehicles increases, the electricity to power them is expected to come from renewable energy sources. It is also expected to decrease carbon emissions.

Electric vehicles require little maintenance and tend to last longer than gas-powered vehicles. A battery-powered electric car can travel up to 200 miles between charges. The vehicle’s battery is recharged through regenerative braking. The batteries in fully-electric vehicles do not require oil changes.

Xcel Energy is planning to accommodate 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2030. The utility said near-term investments would primarily be in distribution systems.

New York City’s Electrifying New York plan calls for the creation of an EV charging network across the city, including the installation of 120 Level 2 chargers. It also calls for 20 percent of municipal parking spaces to be equipped with Level 2 chargers by 2025.

The city’s existing public charging network is too small to meet demand. It is overconcentrated in Manhattan. Fortunately, the NYC DOT is working with partners to expand public EV charging.
