Electric Vehicles and the New York City Plan

Electric vehicles, also called EVs, are on the rise. A study released in November by the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that as many as 50 electric vehicles can draw as much electricity as a high-rise office building. In fact, New York City is projected to have at least two million electric vehicles by 2040. The report said that electricity capacity can keep up with the increasing number of EVs, even if they are charging during peak hours. This would free up the power grid and allow for a large increase in electric vehicle use.

The Nissan Leaf and the Tesla Model S are two examples of EVs. Both are rear-wheel drive cars, but the former has a larger battery pack and can drive all four wheels. While these vehicles may not be as powerful as conventional vehicles, they do offer excellent efficiency and performance. The Nissan Leaf’s combined fuel economy is 111 miles per gallon. The Nissan Leaf Plus is even more efficient, with a driving range of 226 miles. The Kia Niro EV provides ample space and style. The Nissan Leaf EV features a battery pack of 64.0 kWh, an electric motor that delivers 201 horsepower, and a 6.5-second zero-to-60 time.

Although the battery streetcar is a revolutionary invention, its popularity is not widespread yet. The oil industry and other fossil-based industries have worked hard to sabotage the electric car and EV movement. A movie was even made about this subject, “Who Killed the Electric Car?” from Sony Pictures Classics, in 2006. This movie examines the roles of the automobile industry, gasoline companies, the U.S. government, and the general public.
