For the electric vehicle to be successful, it must be a part of an integrated transportation system. The city must be prepared to handle the additional demands that an EV brings to the grid. There must also be a strategy for charging the vehicle. There are different ways to charge an EV, and the cost of charging will be competitive with gasoline for non-EVs.
The range of an EV is important. It is critical to be able to cover a lot of miles during a day. This depends on the model of the car. EVs are usually equipped with regenerative braking systems, which recharge the battery when the vehicle slows down. Regenerative braking also helps to reduce brake wear.
The EPA separates range ratings for electric vehicles. A vehicle’s highway range rating is higher than its city range rating. However, the range of an EV is only a portion of its overall efficiency. Generally, the longer the battery, the more range you will have.
If you’re driving a long distance, it is important to plan for a buffer between the EPA highway range rating and the vehicle’s actual range. For instance, a vehicle with a combined city and highway rating of 100 miles is capable of driving for seven hours at 15 mph.
