How Efficiency Matters in Electric City Vehicles
When comparing electric vehicles, most shoppers focus on the vehicle’s EPA-rated range and how many miles it can travel. That number is helpful, but it’s also worth looking at the vehicle’s efficiency, or how many miles it wrings out of every unit of electricity that goes into its battery. Efficiency is often a function of the vehicle’s powertrain, but the vehicle design, driver habits and local electricity prices all affect it too.
For example, rear-drive versions of the Kia EV6 SUV offer 28 kW per 100 miles of efficiency and ranges up to 310 miles. But the sporty GT version, with a more powerful drivetrain and lower fuel economy, reduces that efficiency to 31-34 kWh per 100 miles and cuts its range by about 200 miles.
The EV’s efficiency also matters for charging time. Using the same charger at the same rate, an EV with a higher efficiency will add miles of range twice as fast as one with a lower efficiency.
As the EV market grows, it’s important that governments continue to use incentives and subsidies that are both sustainable and effective in encouraging consumers to purchase them. That means helping automakers develop vehicles that are affordable and scalable, establishing policy frameworks to foster innovation and supporting international collaboration to support the global production of the critical materials needed for batteries. And as the industry scales, companies like Tesla are working to ensure that its factories can grow quickly to meet demand, while maintaining a sustainable supply chain.
