For the past 20 years, John Sibley drove a traditional gasoline-powered SUV on his weekday commute from his home on Long Island to Manhattan. Now he drives an all-electric Chevrolet Bolt. He says the car is “smooth, quiet, and powerful,” and it doesn’t have any tailpipe emissions. But he knows that for many people, buying an electric car isn’t always affordable.
Some manufacturers are betting on affordable EVs to help accelerate mass adoption. For example, Tesla’s upcoming Model 3 sedan will start at $35,000, which is significantly less than most new cars. In the future, it will be available with an optional range-extended battery package that can take you up to 400 miles on a single charge.
Other companies, like GM and Ford, are working to make their current lineup more affordable with planned price reductions. Several states also offer consumer rebates and subsidies to support the purchase of new EVs. And the Biden Infrastructure Act and the Justice40 Initiative support deploying more public charging stations in low-income communities.
At the same time, utilities, vehicle manufacturers and other industry stakeholders are committing to work together to speed up EV charging. For example, Exelon is committing to provide its 10 million customers with tools and resources through the EVsmart Program that can help them navigate the EV purchasing process, create fleet electrification plans, and estimate total cost of ownership savings. And the National Automobile Dealers Association and Center for Sustainable Energy are committing to launch online dealer training in 2023 that will teach dealers about selling EVs.
