Challenges for Electric City Vehicles (EVs)
The Renault ZOE makes driving electric easy, from navigating city traffic to parking in bay and parallel spaces. And with a class-leading range, it can handle long drives too.
But EVs aren’t without challenges. And a key one is that some drivers don’t have access to a garage or other recharging options at work, school or home. So new recharging solutions will be needed to help people buy and drive electric cars, says Earthjustice attorney Sara Gersen. “We won’t be able to get to 26 million electric vehicles by 2030 unless we address these barriers,” she says.
EVs use much less energy than gasoline-powered vehicles, so they produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions. But since generating electricity often relies on fossil fuels, switching to EVs won’t eliminate car-related emissions entirely — the amount of greenhouse gases produced depends on where you live and how your energy is generated.
Some EVs — known as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs — operate solely on electricity until the battery is almost depleted, then turn to gasoline for additional power. Others, known as hybrid electric vehicles, or HEVs, run on electricity and gasoline at the same time. Both types emit significantly less than gasoline-powered vehicles.
