Cars Powering the Electric City

The electric car and van market is rapidly expanding, and many companies are helping to make it easier to get behind the wheel of an EV. Some of these companies are even leveraging the momentum of EVs to help people save money and reduce carbon emissions.

Tesla

The company’s mission is to transition the transportation industry to a zero-emission model by building affordable and accessible electric vehicles. Their vehicles are designed to meet the needs of individuals, companies, and organizations. They also partner with cities and municipalities to install public charging stations, which is one way to help more people get into EVs.

Ford GM Power Manufacturing

Ford—which makes popular models like the Focus, Mustang, and F-150 pickup truck—has been experimenting with battery-powered cars since the 1990s. Its EV1 (above) was a tiny two-seater that was quickly eclipsed by gas-powered SUVs and had a very short life span. Today, the automaker produces the all-electric Bolt EV and its hybrid cousin, the Chevrolet Volt.

Nissan

The Japanese manufacturer was among the first to offer a full line of battery-powered vehicles. Its Leaf is a best-seller that offers a long driving range and great value, making it an appealing choice for many drivers.

GreenLatinos, Hip Hop Caucus, Sierra Club, and other nonprofits are partnering to launch Route Zero in April — a cross-country, relay style campaign that will highlight the benefits of EVs. The campaign will leverage investments from the Biden Inflation Reduction Act, which adds and expands tax credits to encourage purchasing and installing EVs, with an emphasis on bringing EVs to communities most harmed by pollution.
