For many people, the best way to reduce their carbon footprint is to drive an electric vehicle. EVs are ideal for short commutes and stop-and-go driving, offering low to no pollution levels, quick acceleration, and recyclable braking systems. And while EVs are typically more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts, over time they save money on fuel and maintenance costs.
Xcel Energy offers several options to help customers make the switch, including a free home charging station with installation and a free plug-in hybrid car charger for commercial locations. These programs are important to help ensure a robust EV network that supports more Americans’ ability to buy, own, and use electric cars.
Ford GM Power Manufacturing
As demand for EVs grows, automakers are racing to build factories and expand production. Last year, Ford partnered with Chinese battery supplier SK On to build a “Blue Oval City” factory in Stanton, Tennessee, which will include both the plant to assemble its new Lightning model—for which it has already taken 150,000 reservations—and one that will produce the lithium-iron-phosphate batteries that power it.
Similarly, GM has partnered with Honda on a joint venture to create a battery-electric platform that can support multiple models and a wide range of price points. This is part of a broader strategy to move its entire portfolio toward electrification. While the company doesn’t expect to reach its target of having 100% of its global vehicles be electric by 2030, it sees a fast ramp-up and believes that “EVs will become the majority of the world’s cars in the future.” That’s good news for consumers, who can take advantage of these new vehicles, as well as for our country’s energy infrastructure.
