Electric Vehicles Aren’t Just for Commutes Anymore
Newer battery-powered EVs, such as the Porsche Taycan, can go more than 200 miles on a full charge without recharging, thanks to larger batteries that can hold more energy. This makes range anxiety, a concern for consumers that has traditionally weighed in heavily on EV sales, less of an issue.
There are a few ways to make better use of that battery energy, including vehicle-to-grid charging, which can let drivers store excess renewable power in their vehicles and return it to the grid during peak demand times. It’s a technology that could help utilities cope with increasing numbers of EVs and reduce the need for electric-vehicle batteries.
GM Energy
General Motors has created a new business unit called GM Energy, which offers vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid charging, stationary battery storage, solar products and cloud management tools. The three product and service offerings will complement the company’s existing Ultium Charge 360 system, which connects GM vehicles with seven major charging networks for consumers.
