Electric Vehicles Powering California’s Power Grid
Electric City Vehicles (EVs) are cars that are powered by electricity from the grid. They are available in a variety of models and ranges. The efficiency of an EV is measured by its EPA combined rating. A higher number indicates higher efficiency. Hyundai Ioniq cars, for example, have a range of 303 miles. They use about 30 kWh per 100 miles.
Honda is developing battery electric vehicles for long range travel. Its collaboration with GM will help the two companies produce EVs that will have a range of over 100 miles. The companies will also share vehicle platforms. The first EV co-developed by the two companies is the Prologue SUV, which is set to hit the market in 2024. The Acura ZDX SUV will be built at a GM plant in Tennessee.
EVs have lower maintenance costs than gas-powered cars. They don’t require oil changes and rarely need to be serviced. As a result, they generally last much longer than gas-powered cars. Electric vehicles can be recharged at home, so owners can expect to save money in the long run.
However, electricity demand fluctuates throughout the day. Peak demand occurs in the early evening, so electric cars can strain the power grid. This can overload the grid and force utilities to deliver more electricity than they can produce. Fortunately, power capacity is relatively high in California and the California Energy Commission is able to ramp up production as needed.
