Electric City Vehicles and the Power Grid
EVs are great for city driving. They’re small, quiet, and fun to drive. Using them will make you not only save money on fuel but also help the environment. There are a lot of options on the market, and some are even cheaper than gas-powered cars.
Despite the many hurdles electric vehicles are on a fast track to mainstream. A recent study found that EVs cost less than half the amount to operate as conventional cars, and are much more efficient. And with the President’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program a coast-to-coast network of charging stations is set to be built by 2030.
But if the transition to EVs is going to happen, it’s critical that the power grid can handle it. Imagine a typical large city at 6:00 pm on a weeknight: everyone just got home, turned up the air conditioning, ran their oven and microwave, flipped on the TV, and plugged in their EV for a charge. That surge in demand could quickly overload the grid.
Luckily, manufacturers have come up with solutions to help smooth the way. Tesla is a leader with its all-electric Model S that has the most impressive combined EPA rating, and a top-of-the-line 310 mile range. And Porsche is making a strong push with its slick-looking Taycan sedan, which offers both the best MPGe ratings in the market as well as an impressive 246 miles of range from its base and GTS variants.
