This video was brought to you by Steinberg a better world planner Mr Green Camp power and Marcus Beale [Music] Thank you Foreign [Music] And for you guys who don't know this is A hydrogen car Yeah It's fairly quick I just fill it up That's why it's so cool now we have 100 State of charge So yeah uh where do I start with this Hydrogen car Um First thing you hear is that it is Fairly quiet yeah at this point so That's good and when it comes to Quickness uh not that quick okay let me See and then I'm gonna use the auto Stair Okay But yeah Fairly good comfort Suspension is soft nice and soft I feel something between a model um An i4 and an eqs something like that So uh Toyota told me that they used some Stuff here from from Lexus so oh yeah That makes sense so Lexus they make Premium cars you may check something Here this does it look okay yeah it Looks okay I was checking my uh viewers
I just finished a Sunday driving now This which is the most realistic most Relevant test for uh for Toyota drivers Of course I could have called it the Toyota driving test it will be the same It was just driving slow but okay So Um what is it do what do you guys want To know refueling is very quick it takes Around I think around four to five minutes to Refill so fairly quick and the good Thing is that you can just lock nozzle And then once you start it it would just Go And refueled and then since we don't Have many people uh Refueling then you can actually go to The Burger King over there it's unlikely That anyone will want to come and refuel Right after you So okay and then what about range well I Measured in the 120 test that this car Can go roughly 400 kilometers only but Then in the 90 test I measured actually 650 kilometers actually based on the new Information now it could even be as much As 660 kilometers and then the vldp Range of 650 so you can't actually Achieve vltp range You just had to have to drive a little Bit slow the one weird thing I Discovered is that when you go from 90 To 120 kilometers per hour the
Consumption goes up quite a lot we're Talking about 63 percent increase I have no idea why it's so high because For a Tesla Model 3 the increase is only 30 percent for even a Toyota B set for X Which is boxier and less aerodynamic the Increase is 40 so how the heck can this Sit on here slick sedon have whooping 63 Increase I suspect maybe it has Something to do with that Fuel cells might have worse efficiency When the load is higher and since yeah The load is higher at 120 kilometers per Hour maybe that's why Um So it could seem like Toyota have tuned The Mirage to be driven slow which goes Perfectly fine with the at least Norwegian Toyota drivers in Thailand the Toyota drivers Hammer like crazy hit Some of them at least So let me see is it too dark in here I Think it's fine let me see if I turn on This one will it be too bright suddenly No I think that's fine okay okay that's Fine let's have it on like that I had The rear lights on now but now I also Have the front lights you can see better In the interior but okay one thing I had To point out is it is a bit cramped in Here you see I'm 173 centimeters and I Feel semi-cramped here yeah and then let Me go a little bit fast now I'm going to Demonstrate for to you
Um the auto stair is mostly smooth but Then it tends to do some weird from Time to time But this is actually one of the smoother All the stairs I've seen in an Asian car Chinese cars be like Yeah Korean cars be like yeah So yeah at least that that part is uh Pretty good See it's also fairly okay yeah I've been Sitting here a lot and they feel great Infotainment here though is freaking Disaster man Like if you go to the map here Let's show you maybe I don't know if you Can see it but if I try to move I try to Pan here you see the you see the finger Movement and you see that oh no no You see that the map is moving roughly Uh half a second part after my finger Have moved Yeah And the use interfacer feels a little Bit outdated ancient this car is only Two years old it came out in 2020 at Least this one is from 2021 So yeah And also it has a tiny 1.6 kilowatt hour Battery For at least some power yeah when you Floor it you will see in the power meter That it uses the battery plus the fuel Cell and sometimes when you have low Power output it will only use the
Battery and the battery is also being Used for region but you have somewhat Weak region I'm guessing by the feel of It it feels like it Regens roughly Between 5 and 10 kilowatts But I was able to drive over my I went Up to 1400 meter over sea level and then When I went downhill even with a tiny Battery it managed to regen on the way Down and I didn't hit any limit learning The region limit something like that Because you don't usually go down that Much in one go you go down a little bit And then it's slow and then it flattens Out and then you go down a little bit More so actually even 1.6 kilowatt hour Seems to be enough and also the car Seems to keep the state of charge Roughly around 60 70 percent seems like On the display at least but that was Sufficient at least for the driving and What else is it um Yeah uh stereo here Sounds okay it's not that great the Stereo headlights on your hand seems Really good I tested it on my regular Test match fairly good headlights I wish I had these headlights in the Toyota Bzat 4X which I feel like has the worst Headlights and this one and then I also Mentioned it sound proofing but you guys Can probably hear it it is nice and Silent in here we have nuke and hot Complete R3 with the tires still less
Winter tires they are SUV by the way SUV Tires I don't know why maybe because of Extra load or yeah I'm not sure it's not An SUV we're driving it right now but Um when it comes to space by the way the Rear seats cannot fall and the space Here is really cramped because this is a Hydrogen there is this thing that looks Like a freaking shaft it is Railway Drive it looks like a drive shaft but it Is actually not a drive shaft it's one Of the hydrogen tanks goes here which Means that this Center room here Um you have very limited space it's kind Of shallow many of the center rooms will Be deep right not this one because the Tank goes there So And that is just in the cabin like When wife is sat in here The first thing she said was it's Cramped and I said yeah and you know This car is as long as a Model S Actually it's a three millimeter shorter Than one or less but this this car is Almost five meters long but the space Here Feels actually less than the model 3. That's how crazy it is And I managed to put the baby stroller In the back but it was a bit clumsy I Had to fold the baby parts I mean not The paper Parts the baby stroller Parts More than usual uh
And yeah so uh you you basically have a Freaking huge car but you have way less Space than some smaller cars like pure Electric cars so the tanks you take a Lot of space the food is freaking long Man Um I measured 150 centimeter Hood Tesla Model S has 130 centimeter Hood And the model X is 120 but Tesla they Have trunk this one doesn't have a front The the front here is just humongous It's eaten by the fuel cell and some Other stuff in the front I don't know What's up with that so uh but um I Should mention that I I did the Sunday Driving and I I follow the same kind of Rules roughly not totally strict but Roughly the same driving style right Slow try to save energy turn off HVAC And it did it really really well I went Seven what the heck man Okay um I should avoid these sections if I can okay can I go okay okay he wants Me to go so yeah they're they're Repaving some uh surface here so Um Yeah I measured this car could go 760 kilometers in a single charge that Is crazy man that is 110 centimeters More than vltp huh Can you think that it Was the second longer it had the second Longest range Beating eqs River Drive event Yeah and ie4
Right I haven't tested Tesla Palladium yet but Okay so that's in the ballpark and when It comes to 1 000 kilometer challenge It was the fastest ever whether except For the fossil reference but it was Right on par with the fossil pretty much It was like five minutes difference only But that was because I tested in Norway And then the fossil the e-power Nissan Power was tested in Sweden with 120 Kilometers per hour so but yeah let me See wait can I But it feels a little bit both when I do This Yeah I have so much Cargo in here now Because there's so much equipment since I came right from the uh the the Sunday Driving test so um but yeah so it feels A bit both yeah but The thing is that this hydrogen car you Can travel as fast as a fastest car That's what I figured out now but with a 1 000 kilometer challenge so this does It good the only problem is hydrogen It's the freaking hydrogen man It is like we in not in Oslo we have two Hydrogen stations one that we started With the north side The other one on the west side yeah her Week Oh very nice let's try this one Wow the Comfort here is just superb Really really good Comfort like you have
Comfort on level with model S here And then because this is uh zero zero Emission You get all the EV benefits without any Nerf because now EVS they start getting Some Nerf in Norway you have to start Paying part of the toll road price and When it comes to bus lanes do you have Some restrictions which this one doesn't Follow you can always drive in the bus Lane with the hydrogen cars but that's Because almost nobody buys hydrogen cars In Norway okay let me try go at an angle Oh okay then we go a little bit sideways Like that okay let me try this this Angle here But really good Comfort man awesome Comfort Um Well I haven't really found any Difference between sport mode and eco Mode then they still seem to be Fairly quick ish Yeah So yeah so this is what I experienced With the Mirai it's a good looking car I'm not gonna lie the old mirror was Freaking fugly man the new one looks Awesome and it feels fairly good to Drive it's just they tuned it more to be Comfortable versus sporty and the rear Wheel drive feel also it's also a good Daring feel but Um
That's where it ends right should I go This way or should I let me go this way A little bit But I should set aside some time to talk About hydrogen let me just see if okay Check my uh mirror I'm just checking the The monitor that it looks okay So what is the problem with hydrogen Well let's talk about the price shall we You see before I borrow this this car This mirror I didn't know I just wanted To do some 1000 kilometer Challenge and Stuff and then when I borrow it and I Went to refill it at the at the North Side the price by the way is the same on The west side yeah they have the exact Same price it's 195 Nook per kilogram And then what is that unit kilogram what The heck is that well they measure it in In Mass not volume And then the tank here I measure it now And the latest measurement is it seems Like you can get roughly 5.3 kilograms Out of this but okay short version is That Um depending on how you drive you will Consume somewhere between Um well this is also kind of confusing The car here shows you how much you Spend in kilograms per 100 kilometer Your kilogram as a unit right but then The refueling station shows you a amount In hectogram yeah which is one tenth of
A kilogram But I prefer to just express it in grams Per kilometer instead yeah But anyway so this car Consumes roughly between 10 It depends but between between 7 and 15 Grams per kilometer but then okay short Version is that because of the price of Hydrogen 195 Nook which is roughly Around 18 Euros Per kilogram it will cost you in at Least in Norwegian Nook it will cost you Roughly One and a half to two and a half Nook Per kilometer a fossil car a diesel or Whatever right a faucet car will Typically cost you only one to one point Five nuke per kilometer so which means That this hydrogen car costs almost Twice as much as a fossil car Huh isn't that crazy the hydrogen has Caused a lot more but it wasn't always Like this when oh there was a freaking That was the old Mirai freaking fugly One but before I Googled it two years Ago heop they sold hydrogen at herwig For 90 Nook per kilogram Which is less Than half the price then it would be Okay price but now it is expensive and This is Norway where do we get the Hydrogen from in Norway most likely from Steam reforming which comes from the the Fossil industry So uh because if you you can do this
With the electron lifts electrolysis Right oh I'm sorry for that actually say It's called a Norwegian yeah but that One when you use electricity you have Massive losses and I guess Norway they They care about the electricity for Doing they they spend their electricity For something else instead like just put It on the grid or charging electric cars So uh I would assume I haven't checked Up this but I think hydrogen coming from Steam reforming is one of the cheaper Ways of doing it but when you do it when You make hydrogen from Steam reforming From the fossil industry you release Um was it methane or something but you Release climate gases Which means that okay so this car is Zero emission but uh in order to create Hydrogen you have to release climate Gases so you just you just move the the Produce pollution right to another place And then you you have zero emission but Electric cars they can actually be true Zero emission if you have solar or wind Or like Norway we have 98 renewable Energy 96 from hydropower two percent From wind so if you just take that Electricity and charge your car directly Charge an EV directly that is zero Mission for Norway at least and then Germany we have 50 renewable energy but This thing here Gets the hydrogen from Steam reforming
Most most of it most likely And it's still expensive and what if you Get it from electricity uh how expensive Will it be done wait speaking of Yeah maybe I can I can show you guys Here And then but you know some people say oh But okay okay before yeah they would say That but hydrogen is is the boot it's Going to be the next big boom and for Yeah but now they realize that okay Hydrogen kind of sucks uh so then people Start saying okay hydrogen doesn't make Any sense for for personal Transportation but for trucks and buses And boats and airplanes hydrogen has a Future Is looking bright well is it why would They go for I gotta show you something Here here we have a bus depot and these Are uh let me see Solaris electric buses It's crazy we have over here we have Over there with pantograph These are fully electric buses are slow They tried a test one money years ago They tested out hydrogen buses and along With also electric buses and for some Reason they went for electric bus I I Should ask Oslo why or the bus company Here why they chose uh electric buses But for some reason they invested lots Of money In these charging stations but actually This joining station doesn't cost that
Much I'm not sure how powerful they are But you know a high power charger Cost roughly 1 million look the actual Charger cost less than that talking About maybe 200 to 500k Nook or every Time I say Nook you can divide it by Roughly 10 and you get Euros so you can Say 100 000 Euros for a high power Charger unit but then we also count in The foundation some great connection and Stuff like so that is for one high power Charger right and then for hydrogen Station the one we left It costs 20 million you can build 20 of These for what so actually I don't know How many they have over here Um It could seem like they might have Around 20 charting spots you see here Wow wow they have lots can you see it in The video yeah you can you can you see So you know just round number The what whatever it costs to build this I can I can ask these guys I have been In touch with the bus company I can ask Them how much did this cost Maybe it costs 20 million look maybe it Cost 40 million Nook but I would assume That this big site here could cost Roughly as much as one or two of those Hydrogen refilling stations but you can Service so many cars or buses here yeah So you see It's all about the economics and people
Claim that okay Hydrogen buses would make sense well why These buses have big batteries they can Drive far you know Why do you need Hydrogen buses or trucks even they say But it's all about time you need the Range you can't wait for uh for the Thing wait let me check something it's Melanie Falcon there yeah yeah what the Heck man I have to ask Nasir Melinda Falcon is here We need to uh get him going He's been sitting there Oh is that better than falcon No it's not no he's not he's not he's Not feeling the Falcon but I realize He's not been in the Falcon yeah Millennium Falcon is probably inside Okay but back to the topic So Okay so what I've learned after driving This Mirai is that for some reason when We when you go Schnell it consumes a lot Of energy and think about this Those if there is like a company a bus Company or a truck company or even a Train company But why would they spend a lot more if They just if they just have this they Can just run it on diesel right and with Diesel you have Whatever cost you have if you want to Switch to to hydrogen suddenly you have
To pay two times more per kilometer and You say well but you can get them Cheaper well can you how how can you be So sure that you can get I'm going to Show you in the other side how could you Be so sure that you can get the hydrogen Cheaper Oh And if you get them cheaper okay good But then what is the point of using Hydrogen you can just use fossil like You can just stick on diesel until You're ready for electric like like Oslo Is doing here you see they went for Electric they ditch diesel or they just Face out diesel here we have more Charging these are pantograph this is I Think this is a vdl but let me see can You see yeah you can see some massive Stuff over there Um yeah this is no this is also solar Solaris but with the pantograph instead So yeah And then you can say what about trains Well they have electric trains today Why would why would you phase out the Electric trains we already have the Trucks and everything and the the la the Lines there so I mean electric trains Already work really well what about Diesel trays well diesel train also work Very well why would you want to suddenly Switch over to hydrogen but For for the environment well but the
Problem is that like I said the hydrogen Comes from Steam reforming because That's the cheapest way to do it so so Are you really saving the planet by Using hydrogen no only if the hydrogen Comes from Pure sources you know Green Hydrogen from uh from electrolysis right Well but then you might as well use that Endospice to charge electric car instead It's like deadlock it's pointless I'm Trying to I'm trying to make any sense Out of this I mean the the mirror is a Great car okay except for that it's a Little bit small but it's a comfortable Car has good headlights you know Um it has good range you can travel fast As long as you have a good charging net I mean refueling network but the whole Idea the whole fundamental physics Behind Hydrogen is just Not feasible and another thing I noticed By the way based on the available Kilograms we have here right one Kilogram of hydrogen contains roughly 33 Kilowatt hour of energy and that means That with this five roughly five Something kilowatt are you killed Kilogram of hydrogen you have roughly 170 kilowatt hour energy which is great Yeah and then people say yeah Hydrogen makes sense for local storage You can you know when you have Surplus Solar or wind or whatever you in
Batteries can't do that you have to you Can just you can just store it in Hydrogen well how do you store it in Hydrogen think about this you have Electricity DC from the solar panel or I Don't know I'm not sure if when If it Creates AC but you have electricity you Have to then take the electricity and Transform it into hydrogen And then you have losses In the electrical electricity sorry And then you have Um but then when you want to reverse it You can't just use the same device to Reverse the process then you you have to Take the hydrogen and then run it Through the fuel cell And then you have losses in fuel cell And then you get electricity back again But you already have losses two ways There to do that compare that to a Battery system for example lfp lfp Doesn't use any rare earth materials It's cheap it's of course heavier bigger But for for local storage like in the Building or something lfp would make Perfect sense and then in an lfp system You just have Um An inverter or something DC AC stuff Right shook it all night long and then You get whatever electricity from solar Wind whatever and you just convert it With very little losses into the battery
Because it's electricity you don't Change form into some other like And then you just Go back go from a from DC in the battery To AC into the grid you know Um but so the point is that Yeah but you say but it has high energy You know the the just look at this one We have whooping 170 kilowatt hour in Here yeah but think about this with this Car with this mirror with 170 kilowatt Hour how far can you actually drive well I've done the math I've done the actual Test driving test and everything and I Figured out that this Mirai has roughly The same range as a Tesla Model 3 which Means that a Tesla Model 3 actually has A little bit more it depends but it Means that you have done roughly 75 Kilowatt hour on the model 3 available Energy versus this one this one also has Some buffer below zeros you run out of Juice because that would be a freaking Disaster But yeah so 170 kilowatt hour here Actually I'm more like 175 kilowatt hour Here when I yeah after the latest Measurement 175 kilowatt hour here Equals 270 kilowatt hour on the Tesla And why am I comparing these numbers Because that's the actual like like the Actual work you will get out of it right So in a way you can say that if you have A local storage in a building 170
Kilowatt hour you have there will equal To roughly 75 kilowatt hour on a battery Storage which means that if you get lfp Battery You can probably get away with way less Versus the local storage right so I mean I mean I can go on the normal days this Video can be freaking long but I'm just Trying to explain to you that I have experienced this I I didn't Borrow this car to talk smack about the Toyota it was actually very nice that Toyota would lend it to me and it was Very insightful of me to test the Mirai And see how it was and I wanted to Experience and see and I found out that It is actually as fast as a fossil car Yeah in in the best conditions of course But of course the problem is that you Have to have enough refilling stations They are freaking expensive they have Problems they tend to freeze over and Also each station location has a limit Of how many cars it can refuel the local Tank there a quick quick recap for you Guys who don't know The station we are going to visit now I'm going to end it soon it has the Hydrogen in liquid form because that's Where it's the most compact but then it Needs to de-liquify it But then it becomes gas and it takes up A lot of space and then this compresses Into 700 bars and stores it in tanks and
Those tanks over there I believe they Are roughly they have around 20 to 25 Kilograms of hydrogen ready Um and this one needs five right so After four or five cars have refuel then It has been exhausted and then it needs To De-liquify and then compress and prepare The tank the reservoir So from what I remember each of those Those freaking 20 million Hydro the the Cost 20 20 million nuke or 2 million Euro hydrogen stations they can only Serve Around 80 cars per day yeah that's the Rate it can compress it and do all that Stuff Yeah Um what's my point again I had so many things to talk about but Yeah so it becomes a limit that's what I'm saying you know it it becomes a Limit Um unlike Electric uh charting station they don't Have a limit I mean okay one car might Take one hour to fully charge and then You can take 24 cards per day on that One stall but then typically uh for the Same cost you can maybe have 10 or 20 Stalls and then you can serve way more Cars electric cars right and also you Don't need to drive a truck over there And refuel the charging station site but
Here eventually once the site here is Empty you have to drive a truck over and Then fill up that station just like you Have to fill up a fossil car station Right of dinosaur juice But the way I understand the technology I've also seen that the nozzle starts to Freeze a little bit but it was just me And there was no no one else refueling Half the meal before me so the nozzle Did not freeze but the nozzle can Actually freeze and actually it freezes A lot in hot California even So but I feel like The the train has gone you know Target Got for for hydrogen they had this Chance to maybe make uh to stable to to Establish 10 years ago but they didn't I Don't know why Um and then The problem is that um EVS they they are Superior yeah EVS 10 years ago was not That great Well actually Melinda Falcon is 10 years old And even Millennium Falcon could come Somewhat match this one in terms of Performance But okay But but roughly there you know the the Problem with hydrogen is that It has so many limitations And just the way the hydrogen works the Way it needs to be like made and
Transformed and stored and all that you Know and in the cars it needs to take up So much space and it becomes actually so Cramped here and people who are going to Use them they will have we have less Space for maybe for more for commercial Trucking yeah you don't care about space Or you have more space in the truck but Then there will be other problems like Economics because no no company wants to Pay more for fuel or running cost than They already paid for diesel you know in Company it's all about the money So But I feel like they had the chance to To establish but they didn't and it's Too late now because electric cars are Just so great in numbers they have good Range they have plenty of charging Station everywhere they cost everything Has gone down you can say yeah that Would that would also happen with with Hydrogen but it's just that it's really Hard there is no push pull effect here You just need to push The hydrogen if you want to make it Succeed but for electric cars there's a Lot of push pull of electronics are Using lithium batteries so they develop Better and better batteries and then Cars are getting better and better the Car manufacturers they all jump on the Electric wagon instead of hydrogen Except for a few ones
So that's why It's just too late yeah and okay I guess Some of the limitations with hydrogen Could be overcome they could improve it They could have several nozzles they Could maybe have a nozzle heater even or They could yeah they could fill them More often for example I I've heard that In California those freaking hydrogen Stations they kept being depleted and Empty you can see in the app that they Are empty so and also I heard that in Weekends there will be hydrogen Refueling style people are queuing up to Refuel So but I feel like Technology they could have done it Better they couldn't we had we had Charging cues also in Norway right how Do you improve you make more charging Stations you make the cars charge faster Maybe or you make more sites they could Also do that with hydrogen but it's just That it is so hard to scale it up Because it's so expensive Uh and maybe they they're they're not That many car manufacturers working Together or competing against each other To make better and better hydrogen cars To make them more efficient or to try to Engineer something smart to overcome Some of the problems And that's why it is like a dead spiral The hydrogen is is it's over that is my
Claim like I'm trying to understand more About how hydrogen works you know the Advantages the disadvantages but I Simply cannot find any good reasons why Hydrogen would ever exist in private Transportation but also for commercial Transportation That is my claim I mean lots of people Are going to disagree and say no Commercial is coming you know hydrogen In big big stuff like boats and trains And whatever I my claim is no it's waste Of money and time and no companies like The one we saw the bus company they care About cost Because by the end of the day Who's going to pay for the cost the Tickets of course customers who buy Tickets if you drive around with Hydrogen it might be a lot more Expensive and then the ticket price goes Up by 50 percent Customers would not be happy so that's Just the way it works but yeah so very Long speech about hydrogen But it was um interesting to see how it Worked I mean at least for me in this Tiny little ecosystem here without Anyone competing against me or for Refueling and stuff I never ever Experienced charging cues I mean with Refueling cues I had to use an app by The way to refuel but for me it worked Great because almost nobody uses it but It seems like this system has not been
Designed to scale up I know Um Yeah once we get more cars on the road And once they start clogging up and the The nozzles freeze then there is no good Solution for it but you could say that That was also the problem maybe for Electric cars back in days for example In Winter money manic EVS even today They Colgate but then Tesla or other car Manufacturers they figure out that you Can preheat the battery to overcome that Problem Exactly what I'm saying is that If enough car manufacturer made hydrogen Cars they would actually be a lot better But I think there is no motivation to go For that technology it's freaking crazy Man that they even went for hydrogen in The first place it could be because the The fossil car industry just want to Still get a hold of they want to be in Control of the customers and make sure That they come back to the gas station Or the refilling station but I feel like They lost control the electric cars have Taken over and it's now up to their own Customers whether you want to buy Electricity from software or install Solar or whatever else so Yeah so that is my um five cents uh this Is roughly one week I spent with the Hydrogen and I'm I feel like I've
Enriched my knowledge about hydrogen Cars and now I'm going to refuel it I Need to add a little bit not that much But yeah And I can mention that yeah over here so It's it's roughly around 18 19 Euros For one kilogram in um what the heck In Germany it's lower it's almost half That price but in U.S it's even more Expensive someone mentioned 25 dollars Per kilograms Yeah so so yeah All right so now I'm just going to fill Up here And then that will be it I would most Likely not borrow another hydrogen car I Could request borrowing a Hyundai nexo From from the die but I feel like I Already tested enough Um Yeah Hyundai might be better on Space Maybe even better in efficiency but this Week has been crazy expensive for me I Think I spent something like 500 euros on hydrogen it's crazy but oh Um I will not I'm not sure if I will Break even on this but at least I Personally wanted to find out and learn More about hydrogen and and yeah and do These drives and I have to say yeah I Enjoy driving the Mirai it's a great car You know it's just that You know it's just like you meet a girl And you'll be like it's a great girl but
You know it's not the home the whole Situation we can never be together or Something like that yeah so I think That's it man yeah so I hope you guys Enjoyed this video as always thank you For watching and talk to you later
Electric City Vehicles
EVs use less fuel than traditional cars and require far fewer repairs. They also run much more quietly and emit fewer harmful chemicals.
EV owners can plug in at home, work, or public parking spots with standard 120-volt outlets (called Level 1 charging). Many multifamily buildings are equipped to provide 240-volt charging ports for residents. If you plan to drive longer distances, consider an EV with a 200-plus mile range.
Ford GM Power Manufacturing
The Big Three automakers have made significant commitments to invest in electric vehicles. Ford, for example, has a full lineup of hybrid, plugin hybrid, and all-electric vehicles, and plans to sell 1 million EVs per year worldwide by 2025. Its bestselling F-series pickup truck now comes with an electric variant that provides quick acceleration and up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity.
Neighborhood Electric Vehicles
As the number of large trucks and SUVs on US roads grows, some communities are turning to smaller electric vehicles to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. New York City startup Wink Motors has just introduced four models of neighborhood electric vehicles, or NEVs, that meet a set of abbreviated safety regulations and can be driven on US streets up to 25 miles an hour.
Some people fear that the energy grid can’t possibly handle all of the additional electricity needed for charging EVs. But the grids in most developed nations will be fine as long as they can manage the load by boosting energy production during off-peak hours and adjusting pricing to encourage consumers to charge their EVs at night when demand is lower. Earthjustice is working with a network of partners to expand access to charging infrastructure and to educate consumers about the benefits of driving an EV.
