Electric cars have fewer moving parts and require less maintenance than traditional vehicles, resulting in lower operating costs. They also use a different fuel source—electricity—which is a clean, renewable resource.
The Battery Electric Vehicle Tax Credit (BEVT) helps make it more affordable to buy, lease or finance an EV. In addition, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and other federal programs provide incentives for EV charging station installation and the electrification of fleets, including public transit buses and school buses.
EVs have a range of options, from compact hatchbacks that can travel up to 80 miles on a charge to larger SUVs that can carry more cargo or passengers. General Motors
In the early 2010s, this Smart Fortwo EV was how most of the world’s big automakers thought about EVs: Take what you’ve already engineered and convert it to electric power. The lithium-ion batteries in these EVs were impressive at the time, but it would take another round of improvement in charging times and energy density for EVs to go head-to-head with the efficiency, cost, convenience and performance of modern internal-combustion engines. GM is betting on its own battery tech—the Ultium platform—to make this happen. The company also plans to collaborate with Honda to create a wide array of EV models.
