Buying an electric city vehicle can make you a part of a growing movement toward cleaner, more efficient transportation. Unlike gas-powered cars, EVs produce no exhaust emissions, do not have a need for oil changes, and are quiet at lower speeds. They can also help reduce greenhouse gases, and offer a number of other benefits.
Although the overall market for EVs is moving in the right direction, there are still some challenges. First, the existing public charging network is too small. The most common way to charge a car is through a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, which are typically included with the vehicle. However, these stations can be found in a variety of locations.
Additionally, a lack of options to recharge at home can be a barrier to EV adoption. The NYC DOT is working with partners to expand public charging facilities. They have installed 120 Level 2 charging stations at curbside locations across the five boroughs.
While these stations will help alleviate the lack of charging options, some drivers still worry about depletion. If the utility’s power grid gets overloaded with a massive influx of EVs, it could cause some issues. The solution is to charge EVs during off-peak hours, when electricity demand is low. This would allow utilities to run their power plants during that time, which could increase EV adoption.
As you might imagine, driving an EV at higher speeds increases its consumption. It’s important to factor this into your carbon footprint calculation. The carbon footprint of an EV depends on many factors, including the type of battery, its production, and its fuel.
