As battery prices plummet and concerns about climate change grow, automakers are racing to shift to EVs. The switch could have major implications for the electric grid, but it’s a complex task that will take careful planning and investment.
Tesla (pictured) produces a wide range of electric cars, including the Model S and X. It’s a company that understands how to build battery-powered vehicles that are efficient, affordable and easy to maintain.
Ford GM manufactures a variety of electric vehicles, including the Bolt and Lightning. Its “Blue Oval City” campus in Stanton, Tennessee, is slated to create about 6,000 jobs and reimagine how Ford assembles and manufactures electric vehicles. It includes a new SK battery plant for Ford, key suppliers and recycling operations.
Honda aims to produce millions of electric vehicles starting in 2027 with a joint venture with LG Energy Solution. It’s also investing in a new battery plant in Ohio that will supply its Acura and Honda models.
Renault Zoe
The first electric car from a big French brand, the Zoe is a great choice for city driving. It’s fun to drive and nimble enough for improbable U-turns.
Porsche Taycan
The slick-looking Taycan is the most efficient EV in its base and GTS trims, returning 83 MPGe combined. It also has the EPA’s best 246-mile range rating.
