The Advantages of Electric City Vehicles
Electric City Vehicles, or EVs, are a critical component of efforts to reduce carbon emissions. They are also less expensive than gasoline-powered vehicles. And they can be used virtually emissions free when powered by renewable energy. Depending on where you live, these cars can offer a number of other advantages.
Compared to an internal combustion engine, an electric vehicle has a low upfront cost and can be refueled at home. Some models can even travel up to 500 miles on a single charge. However, there are a few important factors to consider before making the leap.
First, range is crucial. For most EVs, 100 miles will take around 15 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. This is a good figure for a city commute, but the speed you drive at will greatly influence your mileage. If you want to travel 500 miles in a day, you’ll have to make sure you’re able to cover high speeds.
Another factor to consider is the availability of charging stations. Most EVs come with a Level 1 charger, but you can also find a home charger or a Level 2 charger. These are the same type of 240-volt outlet you use for your washing machine or dryer.
Regardless of the location, a number of state and federal incentives help to offset the initial costs. There are grants for one-time purchases, exemptions from registration, and tax credits.
Many people are pairing their EV with home energy storage units. A vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G) allows cars to charge during the day and take on surplus power from renewable energy sources during peak demand times.
