Electric City Vehicles Save You Money and Save You Money

The electric vehicle (EV) isn’t just a greener choice; it can also save you money on fuel. Most EVs qualify for significant tax incentives to offset the initial sticker shock. And electricity is significantly less expensive than gasoline, especially in states with higher per-kilowatt rates like California. Plus, refueling your EV costs about half as much.

Getting your EV charged is easy. Many models come with a standard 120-volt plug for charging in public locations. You can also install a home charger that uses the same 240-volt outlets you use for appliances like laundry machines and electric ovens (Level 2 charging). If you live in an apartment or condo, check with your building management to see whether there are public chargers available.

Some EVs—called battery electric vehicles or BEVs—operate exclusively on electricity, with their driving ranges listed in terms of miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). Others, called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or PHEVs, operate on electricity until the batteries are nearly depleted, then burn gasoline to extend the drive. (These are sometimes referred to as “blended mode” PHEVs.)

Some EVs, such as the Tesla Model 3, are available now at dealerships and online. And other manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW, and Toyota, are working on bringing new battery-powered models to market. Some of these are designed to comply with federal low-speed vehicle (LSV) regulations, making them street legal in urban areas where most city driving occurs.
