MPGe Is More Important Than EV Range When Shopping For Electric City Vehicles
EV Range
When shopping for an electric vehicle, it’s often the car’s EPA-rated range that focuses shoppers’ attention. And for good reason, since that figure helps determine whether an EV can work for a given driver’s lifestyle and local driving conditions. But an EV’s efficiency, as measured by its kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (or MPGe), is equally important.
In fact, an EV’s MPGe rating can be more important than the EPA’s highway or city figures. That’s because EVs generally operate more efficiently in slow-speed traffic where they can recapture energy from decelerating the vehicle or braking. Highway mileage isn’t as much of a factor for EVs as it is for gas-powered vehicles, which consume more fuel at higher speeds because they have multiple gears to help them climb steep hills and accelerate quickly.
MPGe is also more relevant for PHEVs, which use their batteries and gasoline engines in combination to provide power, as well as hybrids that have both an ICE and battery system. But even if you’re only looking for an EV that’ll get you around town, there are plenty of options to consider. And, thanks to public charging at workplaces, shopping centers, airports, and more, those who don’t have a garage can buy an EV without the hesitancy many buyers might otherwise feel.
