Electric City Vehicles and the Power Grid
EVs use a motor to convert electrical energy into motion and thrust, powered by a rechargeable battery. EVs require significantly less maintenance than conventional vehicles, and are generally quieter and more efficient. They can also be powered by renewable energy, making them an important component of a clean and sustainable transportation system.
Electric cars are currently available in a variety of styles, sizes and price ranges. Some can be charged at home, while others must be plugged in at public charging stations. The New York City government is advancing its goal to achieve zero transportation greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by growing PlugNYC, a comprehensive network of publicly accessible Level 2 and DC fast chargers.
Some experts worry that demand for EVs could overwhelm local electricity infrastructure. For example, if EVs use up most of the power generated at peak times, they could force utilities to produce more electricity than their plants can handle. Some automakers are working to address this issue by equipping their cars with bidirectional charging capabilities that allow them to take energy from the grid during low-demand periods and provide it back at peak times, similar to home batteries. And some are using regenerative brakes, which can reduce the need for fossil fuels and put braking energy back into the power grid. This technology is known as vehicle-to-grid. It can be used to stabilize the power grid and help integrate renewable energy sources. It can also be used to manage peak electricity demand in cities and other dense areas.
