About Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
In a few years, plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) will make up more than half of the cars sold in the United States. That’s a big deal, but it’s also going to put a lot of strain on the nation’s electrical grid. To handle that surge in demand will require a lot of planning by utilities across the country.
EV buyers typically focus on an EV’s EPA-rated range, and for good reason—it’s a key factor in choosing which EV to buy. But it’s important to look beyond that number and consider an EV’s efficiency—its ability to wring the most miles out of its battery pack’s worth of electricity.
That’s because, even if an EV has the best EPA-rated range on the market, it can still be a big money pit if it uses a lot of energy to drive or charge. Fortunately, the technology behind many modern EVs is constantly improving—and soon, some EVs will be able to travel up to 400 miles on a single charge.
Rivian’s upcoming R1T, for example, is expected to be one of the most efficient EVs ever made. It will boast close to 800 horsepower and stump-pulling torque, and its 180 kilowatt-hour battery pack should give it a 0-60 time of less than three seconds. And it will use regenerative braking to recharge its batteries while driving, so it won’t even need or have a transmission. That means fewer trips to the gas station and less maintenance in general.
