Cars powered by the wind aren’t just for coastal cities. They can help reduce the number of large trucks and SUVs on local roads. This is the premise behind a new line of neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) from Wink Motors in Brooklyn. The company’s sleek vehicles meet National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) low-speed vehicle (LSV) standards and can be rented or bought by individuals to use on city streets.
EVs can also strengthen local energy resilience in the event of a power outage. Unlike fossil fuel cars, which are only good for transporting people and things from point A to B, an EV’s battery can be used to export electricity to the grid. This electricity can offset demand on the grid by powering an appliance or work site, for instance.
In some cases, drivers may be able to export their EV’s power without any additional setup. Newer utility model EVs, such as Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Rivian’s R1T, for example, are built to do this.
In the wake of the Trump administration’s pullback from clean-air initiatives, some automakers are moving ahead with plans to make their entire fleets electric by 2030. The Detroit Big Three are collaborating with battery-maker Stellantis to do so, while major corporations such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, Siemens, and logistics real estate developer Prologis are committing to installing EV charging stations at all their locations. Meanwhile, the Natural Resources Defense Council is launching a campaign to stretch federal funding for EV charging and accelerate private, state, and local investments and policies that speed up EV adoption.
