How to Charge Electric City Vehicles

The biggest challenge with switching to an EV isn’t how much the car costs or what taxes you might have to pay, but rather how and where you will charge it. Depending on the model you choose, you may be able to plug in at home with a standard 120 V outlet (called Level 1 charging), or you may need to install a dedicated 240 V charger like those used for laundry machines and electric ovens at work or at your apartment building. You can also find a growing number of public chargers.

In addition to providing clean and quiet transportation, EVs can also help stabilize the electricity grid with their two-way “vehicle-to-grid” capabilities, which allow them to sell back excess energy to the utility when demand is high. This “peak-saving” strategy is especially helpful for school buses and other community vehicles with consistent daily use patterns, and it can reduce both operating costs and energy rates for all of us.

EV drivers can also cut down on power consumption by driving with a consistent speed, minimizing braking and heating/cooling usage, and reducing accessories. They also don’t have to worry about replacing fuel or oil, and the use of regenerative braking can further reduce their energy needs.

But even the longest-ranging EVs will still require planning for around-town trips and finding a solution to long-distance travel, particularly for people who do not own their homes or have reliable access to a garage. That’s why the addition of new public charging stations is so important, as well as enabling more workers, commuters, and consumers to install their own chargers.
