The Challenges of Electric City Vehicles
EVs can be plugged in at home or while you’re out running errands, and they often qualify for tax incentives aimed at easing sticker shock. Unlike gas-powered vehicles, electric cars also emit fewer greenhouse gases when in operation.
But the switch to EVs isn’t without its challenges. How EVs are charged impacts their emissions, as do how much electricity costs. And the power that runs EVs can come from fossil fuels or renewable sources such as wind and solar.
In an EV, 59-62 percent of the electrical energy from the grid turns the wheels, while only 17-21 percent of the energy from gasoline turns the wheels in a gas-powered car. That gives an EV its efficiency advantage, as well as its lower operating cost.
Most EVs feature regenerative braking, which uses an electric motor-generator to capture energy that would otherwise be lost during braking and recharge the battery. As a result, EVs tend to slow down more noticeably when you let off the accelerator. They also typically have an extra trunk or “frunk” to accommodate the large traction battery pack, which is one of the vehicle’s heaviest components.
EVs can be plugged in at your home, work, or at a growing number of public charging stations. And since EVs require less maintenance than conventional vehicles, they can cost significantly less to own. That’s especially true if you drive a model that requires minimal or no oil changes.
