The new Ioniq brand could be about to get its first electric vehicle when Hyundai teases the Ioniq 6 sedan. The new sedan will be based on the E-GMP platform and be Hyundai’s second EV model after the Ioniq 7 SUV. The SUV is expected to hit the market in 2024, and it may be based on the new Ioniq 7 concept. The Ioniq 6 sedan is generally inspired by the Elantra sedan, which was also unveiled at the IAA Mobility Conference in Munich.
Prophecy concept car
In a world where cars are increasingly becoming electric, the new Hyundai Prophecy concept is a bold step forward for the brand. Despite its futuristic appearance, this car still has the look of a traditional sedan. The Hyundai Prophecy concept has four doors, four seats, and a zero emission powertrain. It is reminiscent of luxury cars from the 1920s and 1930s, but it also incorporates some functional design elements, such as an air intake below the bumper and a turbine-shaped wheel.
In addition to its futuristic design, the Hyundai Prophecy echoes some elements of electric vehicles, such as its sweeping stance. Its side sections resemble wind turbine blades. Its rear spoiler, which is transparent acrylic, not only generates downforce at high speeds, but also showcases a camera and brake light. The front air intake channels cool air over the drive system to keep it cool.
Hyundai Ioniq 6
Several rumors have been circulating about the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6 which hasn’t been officially confirmed by the company. Although the company said it will debut the new EV in July, it has not provided many other details, save for a name. Hyundai’s design chief has told Autocar that it is still in the planning stages, but he would not comment on any rumors regarding the redesign of the model. The company had previously shown a futuristic concept called the Prophecy concept in 2020. This car would be based on the same concept, but the date would be delayed until mid-2022. This is because the vehicle will need to be refitted at Hyundai’s manufacturing plant.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 teaser video is quite brief, but the teaser does provide some clues as to the car’s appearance. The vehicle is described as having a streamlined shape with a low-slung, coupe-like roofline that resembles the Mercedes-Benz CLS. At the rear, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 features a large, integrated spoiler and tall pixel-style LED lights.
Hybrid sedan based on HMC’s E-GMP platform
Hyundai’s Ioniq brand is known for its electric vehicles. In March, the company showed off the Promethecy concept based on HMC’s E-GMP platform. The concept car had a boat-tail shape and a propeller-type wheel, a low back end, and pixels adorning the windows. Earlier, Hyundai teased the Ioniq 6 concept car with its E-GMP platform. The concept car was a precursor to the production model.
The interior of the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 emphasizes lounge-like comfort. Its cabin features similar elements as the Ioniq 5’s, with a flat floor and ambient lighting. While the sedan is expected to be a four-door sedan, it will likely be a five-seater. Though cargo space won’t rival that of a hatchback, the rear seats will probably fold down for more space.
Exterior design cues
The exterior design of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 will borrow from the concept car that was shown off in March. The model was originally scheduled to debut at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show, but that show was canceled due to the pandemic. The concept car is said to be based on the Saab Ursaab. The car is also designed with aerodynamics in mind, with its sloping roofline and plunged nose. Its clean lines and minimal airflow are reminiscent of a Streamliner.
The exterior design of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is based on the concept car, though it does differ a bit. While the concept car was designed to evoke the look of a four-door coupe, the production version has more sheetmetal and a higher-riding position. It also features active grille openings, rear vents, underbody panels, and optional camera mirrors.
Pricing
The upcoming electric sedan by Hyundai is likely to be a hybrid or a battery-electric model. It will be positioned in the Ioniq subbrand and will likely share some of its key components with the Ioniq 5 concept. It will probably feature either a single motor or dual motor configuration and various battery-pack options. It will also probably feature a more luxurious interior and additional tech features.
In the video, we see a little boy looking at an Art Deco bike picture. He then moves to a man reclining on a lounge chair, which is set in a dome. Behind him, we see a white hemisphere. That explains the sedan’s low, sleek look. Hyundai says the design is inspired by the concept car ‘Prophecy’ and that it will have a drag coefficient of 0.20.
