Yo what's up we are now in an mg4 64 kilowatt hour we are traveling uh Well this is called spending dog yeah we Are in the North in Norway now heading Towards ionic the uh Namskovan actually and yeah today I want To have another 4K podcast I haven't had It in a while we were having a little Chat in the live stream and then someone Mentioned wireless charging and that got Me thinking yeah while it's sounding I Mean I had some videos oh let me put on The cover had some videos in the past About it A wireless charging on EVS is that going To be the future or not well my claim is That no It's not the future so yeah okay so this Is my opinion about this uh my a little Bit of experience at least with with Some wireless charging but mostly from Cable charging and my claim is that Wireless charging for cars Is Other than maybe except for some places Yeah I'll come back there for example For example bus says that might make Sense because when you are on the bus Stop if you park right where it's Supposed to park you could get some Charging while yeah but then you could Also go for a pantograph I'm not sure what which technology is The most expensive one pantograph or
Wireless charging pad no uh and then What about charging power Because already nowadays uh money money Electric buses they already have a Pantograph solution but they they might Not have a wireless charging solution But okay back to Cars at least Uh yeah you know the idea sounds great Because think about this you already Have wireless charging on your phone Very convenient you just let you just Lay it down somewhere and then it Charges no need to plug it in right And then Toothbrush but I think toothbrush The reason why it's wireless is because Of it's in a wet environment you have Induction charging there which makes Sense so you can clean the toothbrush it Will be where to have a plug To plug it in but so if it if it makes Sense for toothbrushes and phones it Should also make sense for cars right or Does it Because In a phone uh it makes sense since you Might pick up the phone and then use it And then put it back there and And then the wireless charging plate There or the technology is already Built in it's small or it doesn't cost That much so that's why Wireless charging the phone is nice and
Also Apple they could even remove Uh wow the whole thing about Apple by The way from what we heard some people Say oh Apple's gonna have USBC finally No they will just conformed to the Regulation they might remove The the lightning plug and just go for Wireless charging only and they will Have no charging plug at all and only Rely on magsafe But okay Um but yeah so For for those devices phone it makes Sense but for cars the problem is that Cars they don't have wireless charging As an option the technology is not well Developed there are stuff like like that What they call again uh Momentum Dynamics I think it was called Wait I don't remember what was that but That wireless that wireless charging Part we tested yeah maybe someone else In the live stream can remind me what Was the name again Um but it requires quite expensive Insulation you need to have this big Charging plate now when it comes to Efficiency yeah some people say about The wireless is inefficient it's Pointless well it turns out that with That technology wireless charging is Extremely efficient when I tested it it Turns out that it's more efficient than Cable charging there was stuff that they
Didn't understand but with cable Charging there are some losses that you Usually don't see in the system Somewhere on in the chain momentum Dynamics thank you very much yeah Dynamics they have a solution they've Been testing it out on taxes in Oslo it Was on the high pace and they also have Stuff for buses and you can add each Plate is like a big pizza roughly like a 40 50 centimeter Pizza roughly well it's Not pizza it's a quartz it's a square And then they can supply with 75 Kilowatt so if you want 300 kilowatt in A bus you just have four of those and in The bus you have plenty of space but in A in a private I mean in a regular car For now at least You usually have space for only one and Then you get 75 kilowatt yeah I know That 75 kilowatt is not going to cut it In 2023 People expect 150 200 300 kilowatts so And I guess the problem is that It's so expensive It adds extra weight complexity and the Compatibility you know there's not much That it doesn't work everywhere so you Have to build up a freaking network of Wireless charging places Yeah so Um But what about for home charging well Great you have a home charging that
Would be great you can just park the car And it charges for you great but On the other hand how often do you park The car there Because as long as the charge port is The left side with the right side not The right side with the wrong side you Exit the car because the door is on the Left side over here when we drive on the Right side And then you just get over to the Charting station and then you pick up The plug and you plug it in it takes Less than 10 seconds Um for a regular consumer that is good Enough To spend 10 seconds plugging in at home But for a taxi or a bus You know a bus driver can't simply go Out of the bus and plug it in at the bus Stop and then yeah that doesn't work so For a bus driver it works while the Starting would work For tractor A truck they need lots of power And for truckers no big deal to go out And plug in a big fat cable and get 350 Kilowatt hour per hour But my claim is that the solution is Good enough Should I Coast here Azure Coast Ing engaged Okay this place invites
For coasting okay either way My claim is that Um For for private use Uh cable charging is good enough At home you just plug it in don don At a fast charger you just plug it in And then you have to dig around for 10 Minutes installing some app and trying To figure out how this works right the Problem with fast charging or when when You want a public charge is not the Cable itself it's usually other Barricades like like app like RFID like Broken charger like other problems but Plugging it in is not The problem here So my claim is that with wireless Charging in many cases you're trying to Solve a problem that doesn't exist if You ask most people like if you ask I Can ask you guys I have lots of EV Drivers in my channel You drive an EV right Is there a problem plugging it in On your Tesla or your fat e-tron or Whatever you have is that a problem Plugging in unplugging All right And also at the fast charger is that the Problem some people might say yeah but You know some women are well what was That sexist some women be like ah the The the big fat ionic cable is so heavy
You know yeah Wireless Johnny would be better well I don't know go to the gym now most Adults can deal with a fat cable Yeah okay if the cable is too fat go to A V3 superchargers that they have thin Cables About my my claim is that there is no Problem really Uh uh with with plugging it in and Unplugging it doesn't take that long and Since you don't have Two frequent start stop then no big deal But for a taxi driver it might make more Sense But this is the problem because of mass Production that it will be limited People who really can utilize this rule Where it makes sense like buses Taxi drivers maybe at some extent some Truck drivers who knows but mostly Professional drivers or in businesses They will be driving this technology Forward but they don't get help from The private Persons because they don't need it That's my claim they don't need it I Have driven EVS a lot actually 10 years Now roughly since I got Millennium Falcon in 2013. and plugging in was Never a problem and also cable or you Know spaghetti of cables well Just tied it up you know there's no Problem really at the fast charger just
Some cables dangling around no problem And cable Okay cables can break plugs can break All that stuff Uh but we already have a good standard Like ccs and type 2 in Europe and it Works great And for type 2 you can get pretty fast Charging oh yeah that's another thing I When we read about the efficiency those Other Solutions not the one from Um what was it called again momentum Dynamics the other Solutions supposedly They are very inefficient for home Charging I hope so for example if you're On 7.4 yeah also another problem those Other solutions they they have very Limited power like around seven kilowatt Only and some shitty efficiency because Maybe they work differently or different Frequency or something and it becomes Inefficient and then okay what is the Point especially nowadays when the Energy price is high and if you can Choose if the consumer can choose Between a wireless charting solution Which costs a lot today or Cable charging And also with the wireless charging at Home you will have some massive losses You know like just so you can save Five seconds or 10 seconds all right I Think people will still go for cable Charging because it works good enough
Yeah that's my claim But what about in The Professional Yeah will it ever come Um I'm not sure because Why do you need to charge a bus in the First place or a taxi in the first place When I interviewed some people usually Even many years ago I didn't do that Nero taxi yeah he had an inero the e-nir Attacks the driver In Oslo he told me that he doesn't drive That far with his taxi and recently I Took a modern wide taxi this was this Year 2023 and I talked to the guy he was A follower by the way And also by the way stay away from Anything that is not also Taxi Uh what was this again I don't remember What this taxi company was called but it Was super expensive the the meter So from now on I stay with also taxi They have very reasonable prices but Back to the point that model y driver he Had a more light wide long range he Would charge to 100 before his uh work And that was it he really needed to Recharge during his time So today's cars For taxes for example they already have Good enough range now these taxis they Are not running 24 7. it depends of Course some people might run but most Taxi companies want the way I understand
Them they have maybe an eight hour cycle And taxi drivers they're mainly just Sitting there waiting for customers Anyway just idling So which means that how often does a Taxi driver have to go outside and then Plug it in Not that much and if they do If you ask a taxi driver they'll Probably say no big deal because they Have to they want to go out and stretch A leg anyway and then maybe go to a gas Station and pee and right so so even if A taxi driver needs to plug it in and Top up during the day no big deal so Then Okay maybe in the case of Taxi wireless Charging is not really needed well but Then what about that project I have in Oslo uh with a momentum Dynamics is it Is it really something that taxi drivers Really really want they desired it's a Must-have to make the life of a taxi Driver better I'm not sure I'm really Not sure about that and as we get better And better range nowadays then like Like I mean even a Tesla has already Around 400 500 kilometers of range Typically in mixed driving in the city Like I even seen some EQ s taxes then we Talk about bringing 600 700 kilometers Of range in Sydney Or mixed driving So
To me it sounds like yeah maybe five Years ago the range on EVS were so Shitty at least the affordable ones that You want to have some kind of Wireless Charging But as time passes then EVS get Better and better so then the need for Wireless charging for taxi is Not there anymore right what about buses Well the same buses batteries are Getting better and better higher and Higher energy density so buses will also Need less Um Less Top-Up and even today's buses they Already have good enough range the ones That we use in Oslo they don't have to Top up once they are finished with the Cycle then they charge at the pool And I even believe that the buses today They are not maybe the most optimal but Maybe they can improve the efficiency Even further you know this is byd think About this byd makes money the buses we Have vdl also do they actually have the Most efficient way of doing things when It comes to HVAC when it comes to heat Scavenging maybe there is even more You can Achieve there right Yeah who knows what is possible So um Uh which means that you could improve Other Technologies like Battery Technology or heat Scavenging or making
The process more efficient and then Reduce the amount of need to top up and Then maybe you don't need to have Wireless charging in the bus because by The end of the day Who is paying for the bill who's paying For the wireless charging customers you Know they just or they just have to Increase the ticket price so then Customers will be paying higher price oh Great you have a wireless charging bus But what if you can choose a bus that Has a cable Plug or yeah longer range bigger battery With slightly less seating space I think customers they care about cost Companies care about cost so Basically and also trucks same there if They need to stop but they have Mandatory stops anyway they have to stop After some hours of driving and they Have to rest and then they can plug in And from what I I asked some guy who is A truck you know I think it was a bus Driver yeah yeah He said that um charging should not Count as working yeah because when you Have a when you are a truck driver The mandatory stop you are not allowed To work you can't even uh strap or you Can't even tighten the straps on the Cargo that is work you have you must Rest but plugging in is not counted as Work fortunately
So For trucks probably not needed to have Wireless charging well then That boils down to that wireless Charging Might be a dead end it might be a Technology that is not needed just like Hydrogen you're trying to solve a Problem that is not there I'm just Tossing out some ideas here you know I'm Not saying that what I say is correct I'm just saying think about this Consider this consider that does it make Sense you know Uh to me it sounds like wireless Charging is pointless really But I would like to hear your opinion Maybe I'm totally wrong maybe I'm a Noob Maybe I don't know how this works But I have to say one thing just Empathize one more thing here is that When I tested that one uh Momento Dynamics the wireless charging Was in fact more efficient than wire Charging many many people didn't believe Me but at least when they did that test It shows that maybe we should get that Plate on a Model 3 and we introduced Some car scanner yeah because in the IPS I didn't use any core scanner or Something but yeah maybe if we try again In Tesla with car with the scan my test Line we looked at the BMS and we look at The energy we spend versus whatever what
We put in there Try again and see if we can actually Replicate it and if the wireless Charging is in fact more efficient but Okay all right if wireless charging is More efficient is that still a good Reason to go for wildlife starting uh I Think most people can't live with a Little bit of losses But it depends how big savings are we Talking about here with wireless Charging versus cable charging you know Versus The increased cost or weight or Whatever that comes with it And then okay you can always say just Like hydrogen you know we had a little Hydrogen discussion Like yeah but but but wireless charging Will get better when more and more People use them Yeah and then the cost goes down Just like hydrogen hydrogen will be Cheaper and the hydrogen cars will be Better everything will be better with Hydrogen Once more and more people use them and Buy them yeah but that's the problem Chicken and the Egg who's going to buy Hydrogen because that technology sucks It's already a blind I mean it's Um it's a dead end you know blend way Nobody is going to make the ball the The Snowball Effect so it's bound to it's Doomed like I said it's Doom because of
A better technology which is the one We're sitting right now fully electric Car And when it comes to Cable charging yeah That's also the case I believe so yeah Um again it's just my opinions I don't Claim that I'm right or wrong or Anything so just want to hear what you Guys think yeah does it make sense or What is it so let me have let's have a Little healthy discussion in the comment Section about this wireless charging and Of course hydrogen yeah okay anyway I Think that's gonna be it for now I hope You guys enjoyed this video as always Thank you for watching and talk to you Later

Electric Vehicles Power the Electricity Grid
Electric Vehicles
EVs use motors powered by rechargeable batteries to free drivers from fossil fuels. They can be plugged into a standard 120-volt outlet at home (called Level 1 charging) or in the same 240-volt outlets that power clothes dryers and electric ovens (called Level 2 charging). Public EV charging stations are also available at many locations throughout Seattle.
Depending on the model, most EVs can travel for up to 300 miles per charge. In addition, EVs produce significantly less pollution, including ozone precursors, particulate matter and greenhouse gases, when compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles. This reduction in pollution translates into significant benefits for the community, including improved air quality and lower energy costs.
While it’s still early, the EV market is starting to take off. Tesla has built a plant to assemble the Model 3 and another one for battery cells in Tennessee, both of which it calls “Blue Oval Cities.” Ford is planning to invest $27 billion by 2035 to make 30 new plug-in models, while Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, Honda and other automakers are making similar commitments. This wave of EVs will boost demand for energy, and the companies that make them are looking at the electricity grid to figure out how to handle it. For example, if millions of electric cars all charge up at the same time at night in California, it could overwhelm electrical equipment and trigger blackouts. So utilities are trying to find ways to spread the demand over 24 hours, such as incentivizing owners to charge at off-peak times or making peak charging more expensive.
