Electric Vehicles and the Electricity Grid
Electric Vehicles (EV) are a great way to help achieve the City’s community fossil fuel use reduction goals. EVs have many benefits including less maintenance and repair costs, and lower emissions that reduce air pollution and climate change.

Increasingly, major automakers are betting that millions of new cars over the next decade will be plugged into electrical outlets instead of pumped full of gasoline. That could create a huge shift in consumer habits. But it also poses a big challenge for the nation’s electric utilities, which will have to be ready to supply the power that these sleek vehicles need.
If all those electric vehicles plug in at the same time, it could overwhelm electrical infrastructure. The good news is that the vast majority of EV owners will charge their vehicles overnight, when demand for electricity is lowest. So a broader shift to EVs won’t necessarily put a strain on the grid as much as some people fear.
But it will require some innovation. For example, in California, where many electric vehicles are fueled by solar-generated electricity, the utility system will have to be careful about juggling how and when those cars charge up. Otherwise, the state might find itself facing blackouts. Fortunately, experts say that utilities can figure out ways to manage the surge of EVs without having to build expensive new power plants. They just need to get creative, and quickly.
