Electric Vehicles and the Electric Grid
EV drivers are starting to get serious about the electric future, thanks to better driving experience and affordable prices. Whether that comes from a Ford EV SUV, the Tesla Model 3 or one of many newer offerings, such as the Bolt, the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, buyers are now taking into account how much they can save over time, compared to buying a traditional gasoline vehicle.
Among the most promising incentives are federal, state and local rebates on new electric vehicles, plus a possible $7,500 tax credit. Ford, for example, is partnering with a battery supplier to build its own lithium-iron-phosphate plant to ensure that it can provide enough batteries for the new electric F-150 pickup to qualify for its consumer incentive. And it is planning to open a second factory that will enable repurposing of EV batteries for grid services.
But the key to achieving clean, zero-emission cars will be getting that clean electricity to where the electric vehicles are. As the nation moves toward a goal of 100 percent clean energy, Earthjustice attorneys are working to ensure that all Americans have access to charging stations in shopping centers, parking garages and their workplaces—to address one of the biggest barriers to buying an EV: having no way to charge at home.
As more people turn to electric vehicles, the electricity supply needs to evolve, too. In Eugene, where EWEB is moving away from coal and toward renewables, the system will need to be expanded to cope with demand for charging EVs. It will also need to spread out the demand for electricity over 24 hours. “You don’t want everybody juicing up at 2 p.m.—that’ll crash the grid,” says a Rocky Mountain Institute program manager.
