The sleek new EVs on the road today — from Ford, Lucid and Rivian — are capable of a 300-mile range with a single charge. EVs have fewer moving parts, so they are less expensive to repair and maintain than traditional vehicles. Plus, they produce no exhaust or direct emissions, so driving them does not contribute to air quality issues.
In 1996, General Motors began a fleet-leasing test program with 1,117 aerodynamic cars it called the EV1. Using nickel metal hydride batteries, those early cars delivered speed, performance and other features that proved that battery-powered vehicles could be competitive with gasoline-powered ones.
GM’s work helped to set the stage for today’s leading EV brands, including Tesla. A Tesla Model S has a 200-mile range and a top speed of 215 miles per hour.
But for the nation’s ambitions for clean air to be met, “it will take an unprecedented alignment of fiscal and non-fiscal policies” like rebates, mandates and standards, according to Rocky Mountain Institute Carbon Free Mobility Global Program Managing Director Britta Gross. She also cites an “enormous private investment” in EVs and their supporting infrastructure, including charging stations. Located in parking garages, shopping centers and workplaces, these locations offer drivers a place to recharge when they don’t have the option of plugging in at home. As demand rises, more recharging solutions will be needed. And that’s where the community comes in.
