A few hundred yards away from the teeming windmills in Vaughn Moser’s hayfield in the village of Voorhees, Long Island, is where Ford will begin production of its first electric vehicles. The new factory, dubbed BlueOval City, is the largest investment by the company in electric vehicle manufacturing to date and will create 5,700 jobs. It will also reduce our community’s fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, a key goal of the City’s recently completed EV Strategy.
EVs are the cleanest vehicles on the market, producing less than half of the greenhouse gases of a traditional gasoline-powered car or truck. In addition, they don’t produce any tailpipe emissions and require far fewer replacement parts than their conventional counterparts. The City, working with our partners, is continuously exploring ways to increase the adoption of EVs and make it easier for residents to purchase and access these vehicles.
One reason for the recent surge in electric-car ownership is that many models are now available at prices that are competitive with gas-powered cars, including discounts and other incentives from government programs. And for those without garages, it’s becoming easier to find public charging stations in shopping centers, parking lots and workplaces, thanks to a growing network of partnerships between companies, utilities and other groups. But as the number of EVs grows, challenges remain, including making these cars more affordable for lower-income families. This article looks at some of those challenges and how they might be overcome.
