The New York State energy commissioner is confident that a few million electric cars will be cruising the streets of the Big Apple in less than a decade. He also knows that the city’s utility infrastructure is not built to handle such a surge. “On a good day, with a fair wind blowing off Lake Ontario, and when the long-distance transmission lines are not clogged by another heat wave and yet another blizzard,” electricity flows from two huge wind turbines on Vaughn Moser’s hayfield in this little village near the Canadian border to the New York City grid, where it feeds into one of the largest charging hubs in the country.
It’s one of a network of fast charging stations, which will eventually number about 30,000 across the United States, as part of a plan by seven major automakers to boost the availability of electric vehicles. The goal is to reduce a major reason people hesitate to purchase an electric car: the fear that they won’t be able to drive them far enough between charges to satisfy their needs. The seven companies — BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Group and Stellantis — will spend at least $1 billion to expand the number of fast chargers in the US to ease that anxiety. They are also making available a free app for locating and booking charging ports. A network of public charging spots is also being installed in city-owned parking lots and garages, where non-charging drivers may be ticketed by the NYC police.
