Electric City Vehicles and the NYC Public Charging Network
Electrified vehicles, such as hybrid and electric cars, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also making driving more convenient. They are a vital part of the city’s climate change efforts. In addition, electric vehicles can help create new services.
Many electric vehicles can travel more than 200 miles on a single charge. Some can go as far as 500 miles. However, a number of factors affect the efficiency of an EV. For instance, engine braking and transmission mode can slow a vehicle. Additionally, aerodynamic drag can increase with speed.
Using regenerative braking, an EV can return energy that is lost during braking. This helps to recharge the battery and minimize brake wear. It also reduces the need for conventional brakes.
Despite the advantages of EVs, many local motorists still drive gasoline-powered cars. This is partly due to the limited public charging network in the area.
The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) has been working on expanding the public charging network for EVs. Initially, the DOT has put up 120 Level 2 chargers at curbside locations across the five boroughs.
Several municipal parking facilities have Level 2 chargers, too. To make the most of the charging network, DOT has set ambitious goals for EV adoption. By 2025, 20% of municipal parking spaces will be equipped with Level 2 chargers.
Moreover, the NYC DOT is working with partners on a plan to expand the public charging infrastructure. That plan calls for 1,000 charging stations at curbside locations by 2025.
