The City’s Electric Vehicle Strategy is one of the tools in our toolkit to help reach our community goals to reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions. EVs can be the best choice for many drivers who want to drive a cleaner vehicle with lower operating costs.
Most EVs are all-electric and get their power from motors that use batteries charged with electricity. The other type of electric car is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that uses an internal combustion engine and an electric battery. PHEVs also can take advantage of the energy-recovering regenerative braking when slowing down or stopping.
Electric vehicles are powered by clean, green energy. They have better power-to-weight ratios than traditional passenger cars, which gives them great acceleration and good top speeds on the highways. And because they don’t need to carry a heavy internal combustion engine or large tanks of gasoline, they can go much farther on a charge than traditional passenger cars.
The electric-car movement is growing rapidly. In the US, Tesla has become a major producer of luxury electric vehicles. Ford has partnered with a Chinese company to build a lithium-iron-phosphate battery plant in Michigan. That will give it a stable supply of the expensive materials needed to make its new generation of electric vehicles. Several other car companies are expanding production of models that use regenerative braking and can be charged at home. And ride-sharing company Uber is committing to bringing 400 million miles of EV mileage on its platform in the United States by 2030.
