EVs require energy to charge, and that electricity is produced using fossil fuels, coal, and natural gas. This means that as a nation we have to be smart about how we use it.
We also have to plan for how we use that electricity and how we can repurpose it as needed when it is not being used by a growing number of electric vehicles. In other words, if the grid can handle it, electric cars can be a good thing for the environment and a benefit to the grid.
So far, we’ve seen electric vehicles being used as cargo trucks and commuter buses for a variety of purposes. They’re able to carry loads and run long distances with high energy efficiency, and they don’t require the large batteries that conventional electric vehicles do.
Then we’ve seen a few electric trains, some with diesel engines and others with battery-electric motors. The best electric trains are able to travel at high speeds with high acceleration power, and they can put braking energy back into the grid rather than wasting it.
As a result, we’ve seen several companies and organizations that are trying to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, and the transition to a zero-emissions transportation model. These include:
