If you’ve ever considered switching to an electric city vehicle, you’ve probably wondered how much electricity your car would need to get you from point A to point B. It’s a complicated issue, and it depends on many factors.
Depending on your model, you may be able to charge your vehicle at home or while you’re at work. But if you need to make a long trip, it’s usually best to get a fast charger.
A fully electric car typically has lower maintenance costs than a gas-powered car, and you can use it anywhere. Some PHEVs can travel 40 miles or more on battery power alone. However, if you want to drive longer distances, you should plan for a large buffer between your EPA combined rating and your actual range.
Electric cars are available in two types: battery powered and hybrid. Battery-powered models only need a tire rotation or wiper replacement, and do not require oil changes. Hybrid vehicles have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine.
The best electric city vehicle can travel more than 200 miles between charges. Those with a higher wattage can often go even farther. For example, the Tesla Model S has a range of 387 to 520 miles.
Whether you use a home-based charger or a public charging station, you can expect to pay about $100 less than you would for a gas-powered vehicle. There are one-time purchase incentives for certain vehicles, as well as tax credits, exemptions from road tolls, and grants.
