In a perfect world, electric vehicles would be a part of every American’s daily life. EVs are quiet, clean and efficient and don’t emit any emissions at the point of use.
They are also affordable, easy to operate and can be charged from a variety of sources. They can be used for long-distance driving, or short commutes of just a few miles each way.
Currently, the only major obstacle in EVs’ path to becoming the norm is battery manufacturing. Automakers are working to overcome the challenge by investing in facilities for making batteries that could eventually power tens of millions of cars.
Tesla is one of the leaders in this charge, producing the first fully-electric car for sale in the United States with its Model S. Its production capacity is expected to increase by 300% by 2022 and it has already built a battery plant in Nevada.
Ford is also working to meet the future with an EV version of its F-150 pickup truck, scheduled to begin production in 2022. It is also partnering with Sony Honda Mobility on a battery electric car to be sold under the Afeela brand.
As more people switch to EVs, utility providers and regulators need to ensure the electricity grid is capable of delivering enough energy to keep the lights on. They can do so by storing extra renewable energy on the grid during times when demand is low. In California, a pilot project using vehicle-to-grid technology has shown that such energy can be stored by a small number of EVs and used to boost the state’s power production in peak hours.
