EVs are well-suited to city driving, as they offer instant torque and can quickly accelerate out of trouble. They are also quiet, comfortable and have ample cargo room. Many models also offer features that make it easier to live with an EV, such as self-parking and smart driving modes that automatically reduce acceleration and use the brakes more efficiently.
Long-range EVs are great for commuting, with some reaching 200 miles on one charge. However, some EV drivers have range anxiety and worry about depleting the battery on longer trips or not having access to charging stations.
Unlike gasoline-powered cars, EVs produce no tailpipe emissions. Plugging in to charge at home or at public charging stations reduces air pollution as well, especially if the electricity comes from renewable sources. However, the amount of electricity needed to charge an EV fluctuates throughout the day and spikes during peak demand in the early evening. If too many drivers try to charge their vehicles at these times, it could stress the power system.
For these reasons, it’s important to plan ahead and have easy access to charging when you need it. If you live in an apartment or condo, you can install a charger for your vehicle using the same type of 240-volt outlet used to run appliances and laundry machines (called Level 1 charging). For single-family homes, check with local power companies about the availability of Level 2 chargers and tips for installing them.
