Increasingly, automakers are shifting their focus to battery-powered electric vehicles. That’s good news for the planet and consumers, because these cars are much more energy efficient than conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
The key is choosing the right EV for you and your driving needs. The most common way to gauge an EV’s efficiency is by using its miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). This number is comparable to the miles per gallon rating of a gas-powered or hybrid-powered car, truck, or SUV.
But MPGe doesn’t mean it’s the best EV for you, so we’ve also looked at real-world range estimates to help you figure out how far you can travel on a single charge. Some electric cars, like the Tesla Taycan, can go over 100 miles on a single charge and get better mileage than many gas-powered vehicles.
Batteries
The battery is the most expensive part of an EV. But thanks to the Energy Department’s investments in charging infrastructure, battery costs have dropped by 50 percent over the last four years.
Regenerative Braking
EVs have regenerative braking systems that can reduce brake wear and maintenance by storing energy in the battery when you slow down, similar to how an internal combustion engine slows a vehicle. Regenerative braking also helps recharge the battery.
Chargers
Charging is a crucial step for an EV, as it allows drivers to use their vehicles without having to stop at the gas station. Across the country, there are thousands of residential, commercial and public charging stations. Some states are even offering grants to entice people to purchase an EV.
