Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
About Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
In spite of grand gestures and proclamations about an all-electric future, American automakers have largely stuck to production plans that focus on gasoline-powered cars and trucks. In 2026, for example, Ford and GM will make 5 million petrol vehicles in North America and just 320,000 electric models – less than 5% of their total US output.
Several factors have contributed to this slow uptake of EVs. Battery technology is still maturing, but the biggest hurdle is cost and availability. Access to critical battery minerals is a major problem that has slowed production and hurt consumer pricing.
In the late 1990s, GM produced 1,117 aerodynamic EV1 cars that proved electric vehicles could offer speed, performance, power options, and comfort equivalent to gasoline-powered models. These cars used lead-acid batteries, and their range was limited to 80 to 100 miles. Several EV1 lessees turned their cars into “green” energy producers and exported power to the grid, lowering their net electricity consumption.
Since then, a number of companies have released small EV-only and plug-in hybrid models that were designed from the ground up as electric vehicles rather than electrified versions of conventional cars. These newer EVs typically have longer ranges and more affordable prices, and they benefit from manufacturers’ increasing experience designing electric car models. They also support the EV market by supplying consumers and businesses with more choices to help them make the switch to EVs.
