With their lower maintenance costs, fewer components and zero emissions, battery-powered electric vehicles are the future of transportation. These cars have become the fastest growing segment of the auto industry and are predicted to account for 58% of all passenger vehicle sales worldwide by 2040.
EVs are available in two main forms, fully electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Both models provide a balance between eco-friendly motoring and go-anywhere flexibility.
The best fully electric cars have ranges of up to 200 miles on a full charge, and some can get up to 400 miles between recharges. These models are especially great for commuters because they can drive to and from work without stopping to fill up, saving time and money.
These models can also recharge to 80% in as little as 15 minutes, compared to up to two hours for gas-powered vehicles. Charging times vary depending on the charging station and the capacity of the vehicle’s battery to receive a charge.

With the rise of EVs, more car dealerships are embracing them as part of their business model. They can sell them, service them and educate customers about them, said Chris Sutton, vice president of automotive retail for J.D. Power, a market research firm.
With the right energy rate plan, drivers can save a median of $770 per year on fuel and maintenance costs by driving an electric car instead of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. With a PHEV, these savings can be even greater.
