EVs are a critical step in the fight against climate change. They use rechargeable batteries to replace traditional gasoline or diesel-powered cars, trucks and SUVs. They offer a number of advantages, including low fuel and maintenance costs, environmental benefits and improved public health.

Tesla EVs are the fastest-growing segment of the automotive industry, with more than 200,000 cars on American streets today. Many of these EVs are also very efficient, using less energy than gas-powered vehicles and earning the EPA’s miles-per-gallon-equivalent rating.

The automakers are betting the future of the industry is in electric vehicles, and they’re making a lot of money doing it. They’re laying out billions of dollars to convert production lines to EVs and to install charging stations at dealerships across the country.

In addition, they are betting that a rapidly growing market for EVs will mean more demand for electricity, which could be used by power companies to produce more power than they currently have capacity to deliver. This would create revenue for utilities, which would help them lower rates for all customers.

Charging an EV takes longer than refueling a fossil fuel vehicle, but the charging time will depend on the charging station’s speed and the amount of battery capacity in a car. Generally, a high-speed public charger will refill the battery of a fully charged electric vehicle in 15 minutes or less.

While a number of automakers have announced plans to build only EVs, the vast majority of them are still developing hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). These vehicles are more flexible than their pure-electric counterparts in that they can also be refueled with gasoline or diesel (or possibly other fuels in the future). Their ranges are typically longer than those of all-electric vehicles, but their performance is limited by their internal combustion engines and the way they operate on the road.
