EVs that plug into the nation’s electricity grid will need to be able to charge as fast and far as gasoline vehicles can go. That could be a challenge for many in the US, where most people live in apartments and don’t have garages to charge their cars.
But some companies are working on ways to help drivers get around without fossil fuels. Henrik Fisker’s New York-based startup, for example, just introduced a smaller version of its 2023 Ocean SUV called the Pear and plans to launch another model with different battery configurations next year. It will also offer a platform that customers can use to shop for solar options to power their EVs at home, plan installations and close deals all online.
In cities that are trying to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, boosting the number of zero-emissions vehicles is key, but doing so will require a massive infrastructure expansion that’s already in progress. New York City, for instance, is setting a goal of having all its municipal vehicles — from taxis to garbage trucks and even the car that carries Mayor Bill de Blasio — be electric by 2035.
But it will be a long road to get there. At present, there are just 15 all-electric public buses in the city’s fleet of more than 5,900. And there are only 86 public curbside charging spots spread out across the city’s hundreds of square miles.
