About Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
Unlike gasoline-powered vehicles, which are fueled from fossil fuels, electric cars get their energy from the country’s electricity grid. As a result, they don’t generate any greenhouse gases while driving. But, they can still create pollution when charged and parked.
To cut down on those emissions, companies are coming up with ways to charge EVs at off-peak times when electricity demand is lower. In addition, regenerative braking technologies use the energy that’s otherwise wasted during braking to charge the battery.
Moreover, EVs can help bring electricity consumption closer to utility capacity. For example, Pacific Gas & Electric says electric vehicles could be used to take on surplus renewable energy during the day and then return it during peak demand times. That’s known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology and would help defray the cost of maintaining transmission lines, ultimately lowering rates for customers.
In addition to reducing emissions, V2G technology can help the electric grid avoid expensive investments in new generation capacity. Electric cars have enough storage capability to make up for some of the most expensive peak-demand generation resources, such as natural gas combined cycle plants.
While some companies, such as Tesla, are all in on purely electric models, others are taking a more cautious approach. For example, Toyota is introducing electric versions of its popular SUVs and pickup trucks. But the company also plans to add a range-extended version of its Prius hybrid.
