EV owners plug in their cars at home and work, freeing them from dependence on gasoline. EVs can be charged from a standard 120-volt outlet (Level 1 charging) or a 240-volt system that powers a washer, dryer or electric oven (Level 2 charging). For many people, switching to an EV means saving money on fuel costs and taking advantage of Seattle’s clean and affordable electricity.
Electric vehicles also offer another benefit: the ability to send energy back into the grid when not driving, as John Reigard did in the wake of powerful storms that ripped down trees and left thousands without power. Using an EV’s batteries as backup power helps utilities avoid costly power outages and reduce planet-warming emissions.
New electric vehicle models have emerged that are designed from the ground up as electric vehicles rather than electrified versions of traditional gas-powered cars and trucks. These models often offer longer driving ranges and designs optimised for the battery powertrain.
America’s big automakers have been investing heavily in their EV programs. Ford is converting its top-selling F-150 pickup truck and Mustang Mach-E SUV to an electric version, while GM is developing a new Cadillac Lyriq SUV and GMC E-Transit commercial van. And Hertz has partnered with bp to install a nationwide network of fast charging stations to serve rideshare drivers, taxis and car rental customers.
At Earthjustice, we are working to improve access to public EV charging across the country, helping address one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: how to charge them when not at home or at work. To help ease this challenge, we’re working with city governments, businesses and nonprofits to support the development of a national network of public EV charging infrastructure, including workplace charging, and to expand the number of publicly-operated EV charging stations.
