Electric City Vehicles Power the Grid
EVs are fun to drive, with nippy acceleration and no gears to change. They also reduce pollution, as the motors don’t burn fossil fuels.
But they can have an additional benefit for the grid, by providing energy storage during low demand times. Using the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, electric cars can provide excess electricity back to the grid for recharging. This can help stabilize energy costs for customers and improve the efficiency of the power system. Many utilities are looking to add V2G technology, including California’s largest utility, Pacific Gas & Electric, which has been working to add 7,500 chargers in its service area.
Many electric car owners rely on their home charging stations to keep their vehicles fueled, and some use a workplace or public charging station. But if you don’t own a garage, or if you live in an apartment building that doesn’t offer parking spots with ChargePoint or EVgo plugs, it can be difficult to find a way to get your car charged.
That’s why Earthjustice is working to expand access to public charging throughout the city, so that more people can make the switch to an electric vehicle. That includes expanding the network of fast, publicly-owned charging stations to 80 plugs by 2025. It also means equipping 20 percent of spaces in municipal public parking lots and garages with Level 2 charging ports. And it means installing charging ports in more workplaces and shopping centers, so that EV drivers can charge their cars when they’re out running errands or working from home.
