A growing number of automakers are bringing smaller, more affordable electric vehicles to market. New York-based startup Wink Motors, for example, recently unveiled four neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) that are street-legal under Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) regulations. These vehicles meet a strict set of abbreviated safety regulations and can travel up to 25 mph.
They’re great for cruising around town or running errands, and are also ideal for getting to and from work in urban areas where traffic congestion is a problem. With a range of about 100 miles on a full charge, these models are more than capable of handling the majority of daily commutes.
Most EVs don’t have an internal combustion engine or fuel tank, which means they need less maintenance than traditional gas-powered vehicles. They typically don’t need an oil change, and they use regenerative braking to slow the vehicle and recharge the battery. Many EVs can be driven for thousands of charging cycles before the battery needs replacing.
Even when powered by the dirtiest coal-dominated grid, EVs produce fewer global warming emissions than their ICE counterparts. As more renewable energy sources displace coal, EVs will become even cleaner.
Properly equipped EVs can even provide energy back to the electricity grid during peak, high-energy consumption periods. GM’s partnership with utility Pacific Gas & Electric, for example, aims to make that happen. This can help reduce both system and owner costs, ATE’s Jones and SEPA’s Fitzgerald say.
