Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the Detroit Big Three
EVs have rechargeable batteries that free your car from dependence on fossil fuels and are easy to use. You can charge your EV overnight in your garage, at work or on the go at City Light public charging stations. Many EV owners also choose to install home chargers that plug directly into the standard 120-volt outlet you use for laundry or electric ovens (Level 1 charging). If your apartment or condo has these types of outlets, check with your building management to see if you can get a Level 2 charger installed.
GM, Ford and Tesla
The Detroit Big Three have accelerated their commitment to electric vehicles. GM CEO Barra announced in January 2021 that the company would phase out its internal combustion engine cars by 2035, while Ford’s new president recently set a goal for 40% of sales to be electric vehicles by 2030.
However, these companies still make most of their traditional vehicles outside Michigan state lines, and a transition to EVs will likely require them to adapt supply chains to support a new generation of vehicles. Then there’s the matter of consumer demand, which has yet to materialize on a broad scale.
Trading a national fleet of gas-powered cars and trucks for a much larger one of EVs will put increased demands on electricity infrastructure. Expert assessments vary widely on how much this could increase consumption, but most state grids have enough capacity to handle it without strain if EV owners charge at off-peak hours when demand is lower.
